Checking the weather forecast, figuring out which missions to fly that day, briefing the field team and much more has to be done before the aircrafts take off from the military air base in Dübendorf near Zurich. "In a way, it is almost like mission impossible", says Andreas Hueni, "and it's super satisfying once you managed to achieve that!"

The campaign was conducted by the University of Zurich in collaboration with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories. The next generation remote sensing system AVIRIS-NG, a innovative hyperspectral spectrometer, was mounted on board an aircraft and acquired spectroradiometric data of 90 test sites all over Europe. The roughly 30 flights started from Dübendorf airfield (Switzerland). The data will be used for calibration and validation of the ESA-Project "Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment " and the NASA-Project "Surface Biology and Geology".
