Prof. Klaus Itten (1944-2023)

Klaus Itten, emeritus Professor of Remote Sensing, passed away on 26 February 2023 at the age of 79. Klaus studied geography and completed a PhD at GIUZ, and after the retirement of Harold Haefner, became the head of the Remote Sensing Laboratories until his retirement in 2009.

Klaus Itten

Klaus made very significant contributions to the long-term success and prosperity of RSL and GIUZ in both teaching and research. His research was interdisciplinary, as is illustrated by SNF projects in which he participated on topics including multi-dimensional remote sensing data, spectroscopy, permafrost, drought and sustainability.

I will personally remember Klaus through my first experience of oral "Vordiplom" exams. During these oral exams I learnt to know Klaus as a fair, calm and supportive academic, who tried to get the best out of students. Through his wise and thoughtful supervision he also gave many early-career researchers a great start in their careers.

As an institute, we mourn the loss of Klaus, and thankfully remember his many contributions.
