Practices of spatial appropriation are important aspects of people's livelihoods, nature conservation and sustainable development. The way space can be accessed, used, changed, developed or in other words appropriated depends on resources, rules and power relations in different contexts. Both contexts and people's practices are embedded in and entangled with processes of globalization with often rapidly changing conditions. In my research I am focusing on spatial appropriation in the field of nature conservation, public space, tourism and landscape development based on theories of practice. I am using qualitative and quantitative methods of social research in Asia and Switzerland. The overall goal is to contribute to sustainable transformative change.

• Values of the ecological infrastructure in Swiss parks (Valpar.ch): An interdisciplinary research team examines the benefits and added values of the ecological infrastructure (EI) in parks of national importance.
• Where Georgia and Switzerland meet: Sustainable development and livelihood strategies in mountain areas: The joint project between Tblisi State University and UZH brings together students of both countries on a learning platform assessing everyday mountain landscapes.
• Morality and the development of national parks: Social and political negotiations in Abel Tasman National Park (New Zealand) and in Park Adula (Switzerland): We try to find out more about concepts of morality and justification of different stakeholders in (failed) nature conservation projects.
• Geographies of street food: Quantitative and qualitative surveys were conducted in northern Peninsula Malaysia in order to establish how street food vending is organised and governed. We also compared this with Zurich marroni roasters.
• Tourism, perception and socio-economic impact in the Swiss National Park (SNP) and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Engiadina Val Müstair: Tourism can be both boon and bane for conservation areas. We at impacts of tourism (i.e. traffic noise, crowding) but also at benefits (i.e. income, reputation).
• The power of images and participatory processes of conservation: Images have an increasing influence on how people perceive their environment and therefore also play a role in decision making processes, which we analyse.
• Landscape conceptions, perceptions and services: Landscapes are something everybody knows what it is and has a notion or even an image of them. However, it is more difficult to grasp landscapes, their perception and benefits for people theoretically and in planning processes, which we address here.
