Map depicting air pollution and lung cancer in Europe

How to use the map?

The map is interactive and represents the European situation since the 1990s for pollution and lung cancer mortality.

On the left-hand side, you can see the different pollutants to choose from (only one to be selected at a time). These datasets are arranged in the form of a choroplath map with a colour saturation alteration: the darker the blue, the higher the value of the respective pollutant in ton/km2 for the individual year; respectively, the less intense the colour, the lower the value.

The death rate value (lung cancer deaths per 100,000 people) is arranged by means of proportional symbols: the increase in the radius of the circles is proportional to the increase in the value.

Through the time widget in the bottom left-hand corner, it is possible to observe the change in the data over the years since 1990 (It is recommended to use the arrow and select the year of interest, as the animation reproduction may be slow in loading the data and result in flickering).

Through the chart widget on the top bar on the right side, it is possible to look for each individual country at graphs showing the evolution of lung cancer death rate and of the pollutants emissions through the period between 1990 and 2020. In order to access those graphs please refer to the instructions provided in the info widget.

On the Info widget, located on the bottom left of the map, a summary of the main functions here explained is available, as well as detailed indication to access the graphs.

By clicking on individual countries, pop-ups with detailed information on the exact value of death rate and pollutant emission for the respective state can be displayed.

Important: For some pollutants (PM2.5, PM10 and TSP) the data is only available since 2000.
