About Leon

Dr. Leon T. Hauser is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich's Geography Department, developing satellite remote sensing workflows and recommendations  for characterizing biodiversity and water impacts to company operations for spatial sustainable finance (BRIDGE project). In 2022, he founded the ESA-funded Biodiv-Watch initiative, which maps biodiversity pressures using plant traits and spectral diversity to optimize land management. Leon earned his PhD from Leiden University, advancing satellite remote sensing for plant functional biodiversity assessment, which included extensive field work on plant trait measurements and the application of satellite-based retrieval methods (Thesis). Leon previously served as a research officer at Vietnam's Space Technology Institute, where he strengthened environmental monitoring capabilities through remote sensing techniques. His work in Vietnam focused on monitoring mangrove ecosystem and aquaculture dynamics  in the Mekong Delta and analyzing the political ecology of climate adaptation. He holds degrees in Geography and Sustainable Development from Utrecht University, specializing in quantitative geospatial methods. Leon is proficient in English, Dutch, German, and Vietnamese.

What excites me most about my work at RSWS

First and foremost the welcoming and smart colleagues that work on a wide range of interesting topics related to water, in different spheres, ecosystems, and regional extents. I enjoy our lunchbreaks together, especially outside in summer! Being based at UZH and Zurich in general offers many opportunities in terms of cutting-edge research, inspiring events, and an environment close to green space and mountains.
