Aquatic life: selection under extreme conditions

High mountain lakes and ponds

In this section we will get to know some real examples of alpine lakes and ponds. Even on the narrowest scope, low differences in rock composition, lighting conditions or water influx and composition have great effects on the biological variety of species in a mountain lake or pond. Since the ponds volume can be very low, organisms must be able to adapt fast to changing environmental conditions.

  • Lago di Cadagno is a lake whose oxygen containing layer strongly depends on biological activities.
  • Ponds Tambo demonstrate, that even small ecosystems may influence alpine economy.
  • Ponds Confin are shoal. Water entries by rain change the water composition very quickly and the organisms must react accordingly.
