periglacial soil

Cryosol

Location: Anden, Chile, 4700 m asl

C: slope debris

Cjm: slope debris with permafrost (ice lenses visible)

Soils with permafrost in the subsoil and an active layer on top. At higher latitudes (e.g. Alps, polar zones), the active layer exists only during the summer. In tropical mountains, the active layer is generally thin (centimeters to decimeters) due to a strong daily temperature difference between day and night. The predominating weathering process is related to a strong frost activity.
