Bart Klem is a former member of the political geography unit. He is now based at the University of Melbourne, where he works as a lecturer in development studies. He continues to be affiliated with the University of Zurich by providing inputs into on-going research.
My research and teaching focuses broadly on the inter-connections of development and violent conflict. More specifically, I am interested in politics, de facto sovereignty and public authority in (violently) contested environments and the associated geographical dimensions: processes of territorialisation, circulation and boundaries. Sri Lanka is my main country specialization and I am currently expanding my work on Indonesia (mainly North Kalimantan). I have also worked on Afghanistan, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
More detail on my work can be found on my personal website.
