Let’s talk about (changing) landscape values.

From the 17th to 19th of January a small group of scholars with complementary expertise including among others geographers, landscape ecologists and environmental historians came together at Herzberg in the Jura mountains. In the workshop, participants looked at interdisciplinary approaches to (changing) landscape value with a focus on perception and diversity.

Let’s talk about (changing) landscape values.

The recent IPBES report on values puts a spotlight on the importance of recognising and documenting different knowledge systems related to landscape values. The main objective of this workshop was to initiate collaborative discussion regarding multi-layered landscape values from different perspectives. The workshop was initiated by the Geocomputation group of the University of Zurich in collaboration with Nora Fagerholm (University of Turku) and Veerle van Eetvelde (University of Ghent), who agreed that existing methods and approaches to analysing values often smooth out and neglect diversity and perception, for example as reflected in language or multi-functional uses of landscape, and that there is an urgent need for research to address these issues. The goal was to bring together a small group of scholars to contribute to the discussions in a workshop setting. They talked on the one hand about challenges which current methods cannot address and, on the other, about methodological ways of addressing these challenges.

The workshop initiated bilateral collaborations between attendees and resulted in setting out a research agenda for the coming years addressing these issues.
