THE PROJECT

Selectable map

In this map interface six different topics can be chosen. Topic 1 "GDP per capita" shows the gross domestic product per capita in US Dollar (US$), which can be interpreted as an indicator for economic prosperity. Topic 2 "Share of Renewables" shows the share of energy consumption from renewable sources compared to all sources in percent. Topic 3 "Energy use per capita" shows the consumption per capita of energy in megawatt-hours (MWh). Topic 4 "Fossil energy exports per capita" shows the export per capita of fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas) measured in megawatt-hours (MWh). Negative values mean net import. Topic 5 "Ratio total energy exports / total energy use" shows the amount of total energy exports divided by the amount of total energy consumption in percent. Negative values mean net import. Topic 6 "Ratio fossil energy exports / total energy use" shows the amount of fossil energy exports divided by the amount of total energy consumption in percent. Negative values mean net import.

All 6 topics can be visualized from year 2000 to 2014. The two plots on the right side next to the map show the countries with the highest and the lowest values per topic.

Bivariate map

The map displayed in the interface below is called a bivariate map. Unlike the map above there is no possibility to choose from different topics. On this map two topics from above are shown simultaneously, topic 1 "GDP per capita" and topic 2 "Share of Renewables". The advantage of such a map is that it can show the relationship between those two different topics more easily. As an example the bright green color hue (value in the bottom right of the legend) indicates that a country with this value has a high share in renewable energy consumption and a low GDP per capita value.

On the right side next to the map there is an interactive scatter plot where every country is represented as a dot with an x-value (Share of Renewables) and an y-value (GDP per capita). By zooming in and changing the year (2000 to 2015) both map and scatterplot can be explored. The thresholds for the "GDP per capita" values have been set on 7'500 US$ and 35'000 US$. The thresholds for the "Share of Renewables" values have been set on 20% and 50%.
