Part 2

Expert presentations, exchange, and discussions

8 June 2022, Y25-H-86/Y25-H-92

Invited speakers from GIUZ and other institutions that already work with drones, will share their experience and knowledge. They will talk about different applications and types of drones, flight planning, challenges, the legal situation, etc. Furthermore, an important block of this day is dedicated to discussing with the experts and all the participants how this distributed knowledge can be institutionalized and passed on to MSc/PhD students and researchers. For this second part of the workshop, there is no limited number of participants.

Experts

Workshop Organisers

The experts of our workshop, from left to right:

  • Dr. Yves Bühler (SLF), Team Leader Alpine Remote Sensing at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF. Expert for alpine applications, applying drones to document alpine hazards, map snow depth and generate input data for numerical simulations.
  • Dr. Guillaume Jouvet (3G), Senior Scientist at UZH and Substitute Professor at UNIL. Drone enthusiast, using drones for monitoring glacier motion and iceberg calving.
  • Dr. Johann Junghardt (ZHAW), Senior Research Associate for Close-Range Remote Sensing, overall UAV data user.
  • PD Dr. Felix Morsdorf (RSL), Group Leader at GIUZ, “one image is worth a thousand words, thousand images are worth a 3D point cloud” (applied to forests).
  • Dr. Claudia Röösli (RSL), Group Leader on EO Services and Applications, Head NPOC, at GIUZ. Promoting drones as a complementary RS tool for research and application.
  • Dr. Christian Rossi (SNP), Scientific Collaborator at the Swiss National Park, remote sensing specialist of grasslands, using drones to capture biodiversity.

Program details

The invited speakers are experts on drone remote sensing. Even though they all use drones, their research goals differ. Hence, their demands and the challenges they face when using drones vary. During their presentations and the subsequent round of questions, they will share the knowledge and experience they gained over several years of using drones for environmental research. With respect to their research focus, the speakers will talk about the drone types they use, when they use which one, and the different challenges they face before, during, and after the drone flight: flight planning, remote and challenging terrain, weather conditions, wildlife, legal situation, processing tools.

Discussion

The last part of this workshop is dedicated to discussing how we can (re-)build and organise a sustainable knowledge base related to drone application. Every participant is welcome to contribute to this discussion. The leading questions are:

  1. How can this knowledge of the three days (2 days part 1, 1 day part 2) be passed on sustainably? E.g.: a regular course (MSc & Ph.D.), Graduate School, etc.
  2. For whom is the topic relevant, and where are these applications taught? E.g.: level, discipline, etc.
  3. Who has and can provide this knowledge, material, and software? E.g.: UZH, external service providers, other scientific partners, etc.
  4. Will there be a responsible person/group?
  5. How do people stay in contact regarding their work with drones? E.g.: working group, mailing list, contact person, etc.
