Aquatic life: selection under extreme conditions
Hanselmann

The modules address the following topics:

  • Richness of habitat types: e.g. lakes, small ponds, streams, lake sediments, and glacial cryoconite holes.
  • Special habitats: Iron, sulfur and high carbonate springs, and meromictic lakes.
  • Conditions for life: Seasonal and diurnal rhythms of harsh and variable conditions, low temperature, freezing and thawing, desiccation, variable water mass flow during snow melt. High PAR and extreme UV-radiation after snow melt, long dark periods below snow and ice, anaerobiosis under the snow pack.
  • Life processes: Adapted for low temperature, low electrolyte, low nutrient, high radiation conditions.
