Visual analytics of spatial and temporal phenomena

Visual analytics is a synergetic combination of data mining and information visualization supporting ill-defined real-world analysis tasks. We develop novel visual analytics algorithms and methods to gain insights into (geo-)spatial and temporal data sets. In our interdisciplinary research, we focus on collective movement revealing cooperative and competitive patterns. The crucial steps supported by our analysis are:

  • Generation of Hypotheses: Domain experts are enabled to create research hypothesis for an unknown data set
  • Identifying Patterns: Common or unusual patterns are revealed with the help of semi-automated methods
  • Explaining Patterns: The context of an identified pattern is identified and visualized
