Why treelines?

Mount Wilhelm (Papua New Guinea)

This is one of the wettest treeline ecotones on the globe. Annual precipitation is between 3000 and 4000 mm. Direct sunshine is restricted to 6-8 o'clock in the morning and 5-6 o'clock in the evening, with dense fog during the rest of the day.

1 - The treeline ecotone as seen from Pindaun lake at 3500 m. The photograph shows the Mt. Wilhelm trail with the peak to the right (4450 m, not seen), the peak in the background is 4100 m.

2 - Upper montane forest, 3500 m

3 & 4 - The forest and shrubland at Pindaun lake is composed of species of Vaccinium, Rhododendron, Gaultheria, Pittosporum, all with broad, evergreen leaves.
