Why treelines?

Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

The Erica shrub at the treeline (2-3 species of Erica including Erica arborea) at 3800 m experiences regular fire. The stump in the foreground (center) indicates the former presence of massive trees. Fire frequency has increased recently because of declining precipitation.
