Snow is a very good insulator and protects soil from frost.

As a rule of thumb, under a snow cover of > than 30cm depth the cold air temperature does not reach to the soil, unless we are in a very windy environment and the snow is compressed (ski slope!). In windy areas the snow is transported away and cold temperatures reach the ground through a remaining shallow snow cover.
