Anthropogenic utilisation of vegetation and soils and their transformation
 
ledge
A narrow flat surface or shelf that projects from a wall of rock
 
lee
Wind shade (little wind)
 
lee-side
Side situated away from the wind
 
lentic waters
Standing waters such as lakes or ponds
 
lichen
An organism formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and an algae and/or cyanobacterium
 
lithic
For soils, lithic means usually having continuous hard rock within 10 cm of the soil surface.
 
lithosphere
The brittle uppermost shell of the earth, broken into a number of tectonic plates. The lithosphere consists of the heavy oceanic or lighter continental crust, and the uppermost portion of the mantle.

lysimeter
A container with soil and vegetation originally used to study the loss of dissolved mineral nutrients by deep seepage (hence the name). Commonly used today to determine evapotranspiration by repeated weighing
