Research interests

My research lies in political and urban geography and I am interested in understanding how affect, political discourses and lived spaces come together to perpetuate social and cultural divisions in societies experiencing violent political polarizations. Situated within theoretical frameworks of non-representational theory, feminist approach to geopolitics and poststructural theories of space and identity, in my work I attend to the geopolitical role of feelings in the volatile political climate of (post)-conflict cities.

My recent research projects include the study of:

a) the emotional and affective dimensions of urban space of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina examining the way young people negotiate ethnic-sectarianism through everyday landscapes of schools, streets and bridges of Mostar as well as how state powers regulate differences around which identity is formed and policed; and

b) the emotional mechanisms of lockdown in Brussels, as well as the state of emergency in Paris, following terrorist attacks in 2015 and 2016, exploring the relationship between geopolitical security threats, dynamics of public affect and emotions, and the urban built environment .

The primary methodological approach I have been developing in my research is feminist ethnographic methodology developed at an intersection between critical psychology and geography.
