The LiDAR Lab at RSL focuses on the use of laser remote sensing in the Earth sciences. Laser scanning provides a unique and complementary source of information to other remote sensing methods, and has demonstrated substantial potential to address problems in environmental sciences in the context of global change.
Our science focus is in both, development of fundamental methods based on LiDAR theory and establishing quantitative, advanced methods for product derivation and information extraction. Higher level information products will be important to stakeholders of any nature and consequently, knowledge transfer is an important aspect of our work. Currently, our focus within the Earth system is mainly on the cryosphere and biosphere. While our cryospheric focus using LiDAR is on detecting mass movement and changes within glaciers for mass balance studies, the biospheric part focuses on the assessment of vegetation structure.
Laser scanning provides three-dimensional point clouds of the Earth surface, containing many aspects of the surface structure. However, automated information extraction remains a challenge.
We are tackling these challenges by using integrated and interdisciplinary approaches rooting in a variety of disciplines, such as physics, computational geometry, machine learning, ecology and geophysics.
