Occupational History
Pia joined the Department of Geography in June 2008 as a PhD student, funded by the University Research Priority Program (URPP) Asia and Europe, University Zurich.
She studied Geography at the South Asia Institute at University of Heidelberg and finished her Master Thesis in 2001 (Title: “Vulnerability Patterns of child-malnutrition in Sri Lanka”).
Pia than left the world of academia and entered the work field of international development. After completing an internship at the UN Secretariat in New York (2002), she worked as Junior Political Advisor at UNDP Namibia (2003). During the same period (2002-2004) she started to work as an independent consultant. From 2005 onwards she stepped half way back into academia and became Resident Representative of the South Asia Institute in Colombo, Sri Lanka to coordinate and initiate research cooperation. During the same period she also worked as coordinator for Livelihood Recovery Projects for Diakonie Emergency Aid, Germany (2005-2007). Her interested is to combine theory and practice in order to strengthen policy-oriented development projects.

Development theory (theory of practice, development ethics, aidnography, accountability), Post-Disaster and Rehabilitation (ethics of aid, ‘performing art’ of aid, development gift, donor-receiver relations), Moral Geography (caring at a distance, transnational/post-disaster solidarity)
