Research Interests

Rony Emmenegger completed his Masters degree in Human and Economic Geography at the University of Zurich in March 2010 and continued at our Department as a PhD student and Teaching Assistant in July 2010. Rony’s research interests lie at the intersection of anthropology, history and geography. In his MA thesis, Rony focused on rural development and decentralization in Ethiopia (Oromia region) and investigated the state-peasant relation and everyday interaction in the field of rural road construction. In his PhD, Rony continues his research in urban Ethiopia and examines histories of Jijiga town (Somali region) from a past and present perspective. His PhD is positioned in the field of urban studies (city development, urban planning, architecture and infrastructure) and investigates how different actors experience, live and shape the city, how social and physical spaces relate to each other and how power is exercised in and through space.
