- Geographies of violence explore the spatialities of social conflict and civil war at the margins of the state in Africa and South Asia. Our research unit studies the politics of aid and war, the dynamics of pastoralist resource conflicts and the emergence of b/orders at state frontiers.
(Projects: AID, CAPRI, PASTORALISM, YOUTH)
- Moral geographies are concerned with the ethics of our responsibilities towards distant strangers and the everyday practices of caring at a distance. Our research unit studies ethnographies of aid, corporate social responsibility and the geographies of generosity and humanitarianism.
(Projects: FAITH, TRADE)
- Geographies of power seek to understand how social groups institutionalize, resist and negotiate power within and beyond the nation-state. Our research unit studies state formation and erosion, the everyday politics in political transformations and political ecology in situations of state collapse.
(Projects: STATE, YOUTH)
We work at the intersections of theory and empirical field work in Africa and South Asia and contribute to ongoing debates in political geography, political ecology, the anthropology of the state and development geography. Being committed to research at the margins of a globalizing world, we collaborate closely with academics from the global South and engage in dialogue with policy makers and development practitioners.
