Research and Monitoring Projects

Since 2008

PermaNET (Longterm Permafrost Monitoring Network)
The PermanNET project aims at establishing an Alpine-wide permafrost monitoring network, a permafrost map for the entire Alpine region, and a common strategy with guidelines for the consideration of permafrost in risk and water resource management. PermaNET is a transnational cooperation (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland) and is part of the European Territorial Cooperation Alpine Space Programme 2007-2013.

Since 2004

Permafrost Monitoring Switzerland (PERMOS)
(Research Associate, PERMOS Office since 2007)
The Swiss network for permafrost monitoring documents the status and long-term variations of permafrost in the Swiss Alps. It is jointly funded by the Federeal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the Swiss Academy for Sciences (scnat) and the MeteoSwiss. Measurements are undertaken by several partner institutions (i.e., universities and research institutions).

2005 - 2008

Frozen Rock Walls and Climate Change: Transient 3-dimensional Investigation of Permafrost Degradation
This project (my PhD project) deals with the transient 3-dimensional thermal response of mountain permafrost to climate change. The main focus is on (1) permafrost degradation in steep topography and associated ranges of time and depth and (2) on the characterization and localization of zones that exhibit critical temperature changes. This project is funded by a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (project 20-10796./1).

2004 - 2005

World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS)
ICSU (FAGS), IUGG (IACS), UNEP, UNESCO, and WMO
The WGMS collects standardized observations on glacier mass balance and glacier fluctuations, as well as statistical information on the spatial distribution of perennial surface ice (i.e., glacier inventories).
