Library profile


The library is the faculty library of the Department of Geography of the University of Zurich.

The collection emphasis is on academic books, journals and research papers with a focus on geography. The research areas of the different units of the Department of Geography are given special emphasis.


The library’s premises consist of the reading room, stacks and offices. The reference library, containing mainly reference books, dictionaries, atlases as well as new acquisitions (books and journals), can be found in the reading room and is open to the public. The stacks and offices are only accessible for staff.

The reading room offers 20 study spaces and 4 computer terminals for online research. Apart from the online catalogue “Rechercheportal”, databases and electronic journals can be accessed.

The library has 200’000 monographs and 200 journals. A large number of the journal articles are catalogued separately. Most of the collection is in the stacks – 2000 running metres over three floors – which we are happy to show to interested people.
