The mega-event syndrome

Mega-events such as the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup have profound effects on the politics, society and economy of the host.

They are often governed in ways that produce adverse effects for the region and its residents and the costs massively exceed the planned budget. Why does so much go wrong in mega-event planning?

This study identifies a group of symptoms that afflict mega-event planning, and suggests strategies to curb the mega-event syndrome.
