Geochronology, Soil and Landscape Dynamics
The geochronology group explores landscape dynamics and processes (with a special focus on Alpine environments) using relative and numerical techniques. A broad spectrum of both relative and numerical dating methods are used to date landscape changes and geomorphic surface dynamics. Amongst these techniques are radiocarbon dating (14C), 10Be exposure dating, dendrochronology and –ecology, soils and sediments which are investigated regarding their weathering state by chemistry and (clay)mineralogy, the measurement of the weathering rind and the use of Schmidt-hammer rebound values.
A strong enhancement in methodology is achieved by cross-checking the different dating methods, by deriving time-dependent sequences and by the development of new techniques.
